Elegant Screen Printing on Glass or Plastic
Short-Run Silk Screen Printing on Glass
We print with a special epoxy ink on glass. It is harder to work with and curing time is a longer process. Most glass comes from overseas and a coat of silicon is added to prevent glass breakage during transportation.
We need to take off the oils and silicon coating to clean glass and plastic polypropylene containers. It is necessary to flame all glass and polypropylene plastic with an intense flame quickly, to kill off impurities. This is necessary for the ink to stay stuck and cure.
Flaming is an additional step that requires a flat charge of $50 for small quantities if we are printing on glass or polypropylene.

Guidelines When Sending Art Files for Short-Run Silk Screen Printing
When submitting artwork for screen printing, please send the original file in vector format (either .ai or .eps). If you cannot send .ai or .eps, we can recreate your artwork for an additional charge.
Please also indicate the PMS color if we are printing anything other than black or white. If you are doing more than one color, it cannot be tight registration. For instance, your logo can be one color and the text another; however, you cannot have half of a word in one color and the other half in another color.
Call for great pricing on larger screen printing orders of 2,000, 3,000, 5,000 or more!

Have A Question About Short-Run Silk Screen Printing?
Guidelines for Screen Printing Artwork Files
Types of Files
(1) Editable .pdf generated from Adobe Illustrator, fonts turned to outlines. (2) Native Adobe Illustrator file, packaged with source art and fonts
Adobe Illustrator File Construction
All type and art to be 100% black in cmyk format. Even if type and art are one solid color (a PMS color, for instance), the color of art and type must be changed to 100% black to print film to make the screen. If a customer’s artist does not do this, Blue Line Labels will have to make the conversion. This can be problematic, especially if art is imported as an image rather than originated in Illustrator. Presenting color in a viable silk screen printing format will mitigate the possibility of revising and resending files.
Document Construction
When working with round bottles, jars, and tubes, please use the circumference of the container as the overall measure. Using a keyline around the perimeter of the overall area and the use of vertical rules dividing sections of the bottle does not, generally speaking, create issues when the lines are left in place. Working with the circumference as an overall measure allows art and type elements to be placed in exact positions on the containers (e.g., front art and back ingredients/directions positioned exactly 180 degrees in opposition to each other).
Typography
Artists with extensive experience in advertising typography and lithography (myself included) find parameters for providing appropriate typesetting for the silk screen process arcane and rather bizarre. The bottom line is that silk screen printers are not printing on paper from an offset plate or using a digital printer. Silk screen printers are pushing ink through a silk screen. Producing an extremely fine line in screen printing is rather like pushing angel hair pasta through a fine screen colander and expecting angel hair pasta as a result. The angel hair pasta just gets smaller, as do thin lines in screen printing.
These are our recommendations, which stress reproducibility on containers rather than a designer’s adamant insistence that nearly invisible lines, which fade from hairline to nothing, are absolutely essential elements of the design effort. Hopefully, an amicable compromise can be reached.
Fonts
Extremely thin-line fonts are to be avoided unless they can be used at sizes of at least 7 point. Serif fonts present problems. Not only are the serifs spindly, serif fonts feature both thick and thin horizontal and vertical strokes. Perhaps not as desirable from a purely aesthetic standpoint, regular weight sans-serif fonts avoid most of the problems endemic to the silk screen printing of serif fonts. A regular weight condensed sans-serif face is a blessing to silk screeners. Considering that most of the type is on the back of containers and consists of directions and ingredients—which are intended to be read—makes a strong case for sans-serif fonts. When using a sans-serif font you can make the point size 5 or more. Fonts like Avenir , Arial and Helvetica are commonly used and screen print clean and beautiful.
Letter Spacing (overall tracking)
Silk screeners need room between characters. Negative letterspacing is anathema to the silk screen process. Condensing a normal face creates the same types of problems. Not only does reducing tracking place the characters too close or touching, it also closes up the counter of the characters, the filled-in portion of an “e,” for instance. (The same effect can be seen when applying strokes to type to make fonts bolder. Eventually the counter is completely closed.)
Logos and Other Art
If extremely fine strokes are present, please push the limits of the size of the art to be as large as aesthetically acceptable to the designer/client. We understand the sensitivity and importance of producing products that reflect the exact reproduction of a customer’s branding style. We will work with you to make that happen for your silk screen products.
Keep your design simple! Screen Printing is made for an elegant and minimalistic look.
